Sedation

  • Who needs sedation?

Who needs sedation?

Some patients have dental anxiety, they are unable to comfortably tolerate dental visits and treatment. These patients can benefit from conscious sedation or anxiolysis.

What are the advantages of sedation?

Sedation will allow patients to comfortably tolerate dental procedures, this allows them to sit comfortably in the chair, and help control their blood pressure. Another advantage of advanced sedation techniques is inability to remember the dental procedure being performed.

What are the different kinds of sedation?

We will work with you on determining which type of sedation is best suited for you. This will depend on your medical history, the type of procedure being performed, and the degree of anxiety.

The types of sedation available in our practice are:

  • Inhalation anxiolysis/sedation: This is done with Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). This is the least invasive means of anxiolysis/sedation. It works well for most patients, who have little anxiety. However, the need for masks to deliver Nitrous Oxide may present a limitation on the type of procedures that inhalation anxiolysis/ sedation can be administered with.
  • Oral anxiolysis/sedation: This is performed with orally administered prescription drugs. This technique helps in a variety of situation. Patients are not allowed to drive before or after the procedure. The main disadvantage is inability to titrate (modify) the drug after administration.
  • Intravenous conscious sedation: This is performed by pushing drugs directly into the vein. This allows titration of the administered drugs, and offers the advantage of not remembering the procedure
