Biopsies

What is oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer screening is part of every dental examination. The dentist will look, feel and palpate the soft and hard tissues of the mouth and circumoral area. Oral cancer and other pathologic conditions can be very serious and even fatal. Thus, it is very important to diagnose any condition early and correctly. Oral cancer screening are an essential part of every dental examination.

Why are biopsies necessary?

Dentists are well-trained in identifying oral and systemic diseases that might present in the oral cavity. However, in some circumstances, a definite diagnosis can only be established after a histopathologic examination. Biopsies are taken, fixated, and sent to an oral pathologist for extensive evaluation. The correct diagnosis is essential in management. The sooner the disease is diagnosed, the better the prognosis.

What are the different kinds of biopsies?

There are several kinds of biopsies, the most common of which are brush biopsies, aspiration, incisional, and excisional biopsies. The choice of the kind of biopsy will depend mainly on the clinical presentation and differential diagnosis.
